After the success obtained with the type 33/2, in the Sports Prototype Championship in the up to 2000cc category and after winning International Title in 1970 with Giulia GTAm , Autodelta presented a revised version of 33/3 type, one of the most important cars of its racing history .
With this project Ing. C. Chiti came back to fight for the World Title Sports Prototypes, with rivals Porsche and Ferrari. The 33/3 is a car according to Group 6 regulations (up to 3000 engine capacity) with an modified H - aluminium box frame 33 derived from first type and with many magnesium components, V8 engine - 2998cc Twin Cams - 32valves - mechanical Fuel Injection Lucas - 420HP at 9000rpm - 5 speed gearbox outboard - weight 650kg.
This car has been developed for endurance races but even though it was lower on data (the Porsche 917 had a V12 engine and 5000cc. With 580hp) it had a very reliable engine and a great structural strength, this made it particularly competitive in tougher races and on the most difficult tracks like Targa Florio and Nurburgring.
The 33/3 in 1971 succeeded to undermine the long domination of Porsche in Sport Prototype Championship, and despite the lack of power compared to its rivals it came second in the Championship standings bypassing the Ferrari 512M equipped with V12 - 5000 cc engine and thus realizing the return of Alfa Romeo among the greatest in history of world motoring.
